Dowa Rock Temple Visit

Dowa temple, also known as ‘Dowa Rajamaha Viharaya’ is located in Bandarawela. It holds a great cultural and historical significance as it is believed to be constructed during King Walagamba’s era. Ancient legend reveals that King Walagamba sought refuge at this place during enemy attacks and later converted it into a buddhist monastery.

The temple holds a great architectural value as its carved woodwork, murals and stone craftsmanship reflects the influence of the Kandyan era.

One of the highlights of the temple is its cave temple which is full of colorful murals illustrating the past life stories of the lord buddha. The temple is also famous for the only rock-hewn buddha statue in highlands, spanning a length of approximately 38 ft.
