Mulkirigala Rock Temple Monastery Visit

Situated in Hambantota district of southern Sri Lanka, Mulkirigala temple stands as a testament to ancient Sri Lanka Buddhist arts and architecture. This magnificent temple features several impressive cave temples, rock-cut statues and a bo tree that is considered to be a shoot from Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura. Dated back to the 3rd century BC, this rock is believed to be found by King Saddhathissa, the brother of the infamous King Dutugemunu in Sri Lankan history. It was later converted into a monastery by the king, hence falls under many ‘Raja Maha Viharas’ (Built by the king) in SriLanka. This can be considered as one of the oldest monasteries in the world inhabited by the monks at present.

As you ascend the steps, you will be greeted by stunning cave paintings that depict the beauty of Kandyan era arts. Not to forget the breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes.

One of the signature destinations of Travitus tours is Mulkirigala temple which allows you to experience a magnificent history, culture and architecture.
